Stage, Shows and COVID-19

Watching ‘The Royal Ballet Back on Stage’ a few weeks ago was one of the most magical feelings I have felt in the last year. Seeing the dance world re-emerge during the COVID-19 pandemic has showed the true determination, grit and dedication of creatives. As COVID-19 progresses we are beginning to see creative new ways of the dance world adjusting their performances to continue to engage audiences. The Royal Opera House have recently announced a shortened COVID-safe version of The Nutcracker and are also offering livestream performances as well as releasing pre-recorded shows. The Royal Ballet have livestreamed classes on world ballet day along with other dance companies around the world. I for one, am always excited to hear about livestreams and this is why:

Talking to my younger students about performance has never been more difficult as they struggle to imagine the concept of a stage when dancing in their lounge or even in a small box at the studio. Being able to say to these students ‘Hey, have you had a look at the live performances by the Royal Opera House or did you see the Royal ballet rehearsing on stage?’ is invaluable. Not only have online events made performance more accessible to my students they have opened the eyes of society as whole. Talking of performances opening the eyes of society, it would be rude not to mention a certain Christmas advert that has launched recently! It is a fantastic nod to all dancers who have stayed dedicated to their art over the last year. If you haven’t watched it, go and enjoy a bit of Christmas magic…
