Silver Swans, Adult Ballet and a Trip to London

Have you heard of Silver Swans? Silver Swans classes are designed especially for older dancers but welcome anyone who wishes to experience ballet at a gentler pace. This week I was lucky enough to study the Silver Swans course at the Royal Academy of Dance. I have always loved teaching adults and this course supported me in that practice by giving me some brilliant insights into how adults learn.

If you’re not convinced yet about attending an adult ballet classes or indeed becoming a Silver Swan here are my top 5 reasons why ballet dancing is brilliant for adults too. And don’t just take it from me, this top 5 has been written with support from the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science Website:

1. Dancing supports positive metal health- It’s tricky to dance without smiling and there is nothing quite like the sense of achievement that you feel after mastering a new step.

2. Dance is fantastic for muscular endurance- As we all get older our muscle mass naturally starts to decline. Ballet dancing has been proven to reduce the rate at which this happens.

3. Dance can help to improve bone density- Aging causes loss in bone density and women experiencing hormonal changes are especially at risk. The good news is that bone is a living tissue that responds positively to exercise by becoming stronger.

4. Dance encourages social interaction- We all love a good natter and a giggle so why not do it over a few ballet steps? Dance also encourages a sense of belonging and enjoying an activity with like-minded people

5. Dance offers improvement in flexibility and balance- Falling is one of the biggest costs to the NHS and one of the biggest problems in old age. Ballet offers a variety of steps that help to improve balance including marching, plié and single leg standing.

So why not give it a go? I would love to welcome you to my online beginners or improvers class which welcome adults of all ages.
