Self-Esteem, Self-Worth & Confidence
I am a bit late with this blog post as mental health awareness week was last week... woops! Despite my bad timing, I thought it would still be good to share the positive effects that dance can have on us humans!
Everyday I am lucky enough to witness the happiness that people experience from ballet dancing. The thrill of jumping high enough to create pointy toes, the excitement of leaping across an open floor and the smile that music brings to people's faces. Evidence shows that engaging with dance can lead to positive long-term psychological effects such as improved self-esteem, self-worth and confidence. A big thumbs up!
Despite these wonderful experiences, dance affects each and every one of us in different ways. A step or a move that can make one person feel very happy may make another person feel uncomfortable. This is why I love teaching online; people can practice steps and build up confidence in the comfort of their own home. There is no denying that dancing in a studio is special and allows for professional standards. However, online dancing can help people to feel part of a community, give everyone a chance to fulfill their daily exercise and makes ballet accessible for those who would otherwise be unable to visit a studio environment.
Doing what you like is freedom and liking what you do is happiness, so whether you are dancing at home or in a studio, see dance as a chance to perform, to be free and to do something completely for yourself. Think positively about the progress you have made and let negative mood leave your body as you dream with your feet to the rhythm of the music.
